Giants Select Zach Morgan

The Giants selected catcher Zach Morgan onto the major league roster for tonight’s game against Houston. Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle first reported this evening that Morgan was joining the club in San Francisco. The Giants already had an opening on the 40-man roster and will place Daniel Susac on the 10-day injured list (left patella fracture) to open an active roster spot.

Morgan gets the first big league call of his career. The Giants added him to the system in 2022, selecting him in the seventh round out of Fresno State. Morgan has never gotten much prospect attention but was viewed as a solid organizational depth type as one of the top senior signees of his draft year. He’s a right-handed hitter who has mostly put the ball in play with minimal impact in his minor league career. Morgan owns a.237/.337/.349 line with an 18% strikeout rate in a little over 1000 professional plate appearances.

That includes a.269/.369/.370 slash with a pair of home runs across 131 trips between the top two minor league levels this season. Morgan is 2-16 in throwing out attempted basestealers and has committed one passed ball in 165 innings behind the dish in Triple-A. He’ll back up Drew Cavanaugh for at least tonight.

It might be a short big league stint. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the Giants are looking to add a more experienced backup option for the stretch run. Cavanaugh is expected to get the majority of the playing time the rest of the way.

Former Giants Chadwick Tromp and Andrew Knizner are free agents. San Francisco could try to claim Willie MacIver when the Blue Jays place him on waivers this week after designating him for assignment this afternoon. They’ll have the fifth-highest priority on the waiver wire. They can also look to the trade market for a player who hasn’t been on a 40-man roster this season (e.g. Washington’s Riley Adams, White Sox’s Korey Lee).
